Cuba Film Commission: From Vision to Action

Cuba Film Commission; Cuba’s ambition to become a top film destination is no longer just a dream—it’s taking shape. In late 2024, the government passed Agreement 9971/2024, officially launching the Cuban Film Commission. This new state-backed entity aims to promote and grow audiovisual production across the island.

In March 2025, the Cuba Film Commission held its first official session, marking a new phase of action and global outreach. Culture Minister Alpidio Alonso Grau led the meeting, joined by key figures like Alfonso Noya (President of the Institute of Social Communication) and Alexis Triana (President of ICAIC). Together, they presented the Commission’s roadmap, supported by legal frameworks and coordinated through ICAIC’s new Film Commission Office.

During the session, officials introduced initial projects, co-production opportunities, and service offerings. They focused on attracting foreign investment and supporting Cuba’s 65 independent audiovisual collectives. Thanks to updated payment structures, state entities can now offer more flexible compensation to production crews—a long-awaited change for industry professionals.

Minister Alonso highlighted ICAIC’s recent work with international producers and independent Cuban creators. He encouraged new proposals that could boost Cuba’s role in Latin America’s growing film economy.

Representatives from the Ministries of Tourism, Foreign Trade, Foreign Affairs, Customs, and the Havana Film Festival also attended. Their presence reinforced Cuba’s cross-sector commitment to cinematic production. This should make thing easier for local and foreign productions.
